Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the ability to question certain rulings made by the chair umpire, following the protocol already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
