European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
