Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, he said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
